City staff learn about accessibility

Accessibility consultant, Melissa Lyon, was in town on February 25 and 26, 2026, to teach City staff about accessibility and inclusion. Approximately 45 workers, across various city departments, completed training that covered a variety of topics, including:

  • Why accessibility matters
  • Provincial legislation surrounding accessibility
  • Service providers' duty to accommodate
  • The many types of disabilities, many of which are invisible
  • Appropriate language
  • Ways to improve accessibility in general, and at the City

One staff said the training was "eye-opening" and that they had no idea there was so much to know. Others committed to putting what they learned into practice in their jobs.

This training is just one of many action items in the City of Terrace's Accessibility Plan, which is currently focused on the areas of information and communication.

Some staff will complete more training online, more specifically focused on creating accessible documents and presentations, and hosting accessible events.

While in Terrace, Melissa also toured four City facilities and gave suggestions on how to improve accessibility throughout the buildings. She will also be creating tools for City staff to use, for example, a checklist for creating accessible documents.

The City would like to thank Sparc BC. All these initiatives have been paid for by their Local Community Accessibility Grant Program.
