Why are we creating a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP)?

In the past decade, there has been an upswing in wildfire activity throughout the province.

The CWRP is the next generation of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), which is now out of date.

Creating a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP) gives us the opportunity to re-examine wildfire risks in depth and update our wildfire preparedness plan accordingly.

Where is the funding for the CWRP coming from?

Funding for the creation of the CWRP is through the Government of BC's Community Resiliency Investment (CRI), which is offered through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM).

Prioritization of funding is based off of assessed risk.

The intent of the CRI funding is effective wildfire risk reduction that will mitigate threats to communities at the local and provincial scale.

What will be the main changes between the CWPP and the CWRP

The Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) was created in partnership with the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine 15 years ago (in 2009). This CWRP will focus specifically on Terrace and provide recommendations to a more focused area.

The updated CWRP will also reflect changes based on the following:

    • recent wildfires
    • vegetation management
    • changes to the built environment due to development
    • economic changes; and
    • considerations of other factors that will affect the overall success of the plan

The new CWRP will identify the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) around Terrace, the area where urban dwellings meet forested areas. The report will provide recommendations to mitigate wildfire within those forest fuels. The CWPP did not include this info.
