October 12, 2023: Draft General, Sewer & Water Operating Budget Meeting

Our budget 2024 process continues. Tonight, we look at our operating costs.

Last week, staff presented capital projects and expenses—these are our long-term investments in our infrastructure and facilities, like road reconstruction, park upgrades, equipment replacement, sewer and water infrastructure, and other one-time costs. Generally, these are paid for through our reserve fund as well as grants we apply for (something we do a lot!). Staff outlined our plans for next year as well as our goals for the four years after that, as required by the Community Charter, for Council to review.

Tonight, we’ll be talking about the operating costs—that’s our ongoing, repeated expenses for things like staff wages, utilities, and supplies. These costs are generally paid for with property taxes and user fees (and we usually aren’t allowed to use grants for operating costs). We’ll also be sharing the results of our Citizen Satisfaction Survey so Council and staff can consider them before the budget is finalized.
